There are two points in your question. One is how to use it. before you use, you have to activate them. The first way is to go to control panel and activate from there.. the another way may be that you have to find out if you have any software that you need to re install to activate them.

The other point is that, it depends how many mega pixels your camera is. I am sure that you no need to start voice chat to take photos. But for this also you must have a software in laptop where you can have the applications to capture photo or capture video etc.. Please check.

Or you can call to Sony support any way! Best of luck.

The camera should turn on when one boot up the computer. To check if it turned on or not. goto the Device manager and try to find the imaging device and see if you can find the camera being activated.
If one must activate the camera goto Control Panel and click the scanner and camera icon, then doubleclick the camera icon, one can also use the wizard to see if the camera is working

You can also try to use it by downloading a copy of MSN live Messager free from here

and in the Tools menu and Audio and Video setup, one can check if the audio and Video are working properly

For your other question whether can use camera to take photo… note that the camera is mainly design for web application as a webcam. One can also use it take snap shot but the quality will not be as good as a ordinary digital camera.
