It sounds like the product code you are trying to enter is for the copy of windows you have installed on your machine and not the code for Microsoft Office itself, this should be on the box it came in or the manual or CD/DVD case. If yours is a copied version then you are kind of out of luck, in which case try open office.
Microsoft Office has its own Product Key. It will be on the packaging that the CD came in. (I hope you haven’t thrown it away!)

It is quite featureful, I have been using it exclusively for a few years under Linux, and it can import MS Office documents quite well.
Microsoft appears to be resurrecting the old trick of breaking compatibility with previous versions of their software, in order to force users to upgrade. You will see no such tactics from Open Office (Sun), they have a solid product and I wouldn’t switch back for anything.
If you have Office on your desktop, you cannot legally use it on your laptop at the same time.
Other free options would be Google Docs or OpenOffice.
you unfortually have to buy office the key on the bottom is for installing the OS cause microsuck is gay like that if you have another office install disc weith it be older or not. You can install that instead….Also there are other programs out there that work just as well called Open Office and thunderbird will do exactally what you use office for.
