There are 2 suggestions to question “My Toshiba Portege 3010 Laptop won't recognize the USB drive…?”

  1. reformatted the disk how? with the external cd drive? how did you do that, from the Windows CD? If so, the drive may not be able to communicate with the machine, UNLESS . . .

you may be able to set the BIOS to recognize a USB drive as a boot device

    take a look here too:

  2. The Iomega drive should have come with a utility disk that you should be able to get support in real mode. If it’s on a CD you may have to use another computer to make the floppy disk.

I’m surpised Windows XP was even on a notebook computer without a CD/DVD drive. It must be a pretty old computer with very limited resources, so I’m wondering how well it’s going to run or what you are going to be able to do with it.

I looked up your hardware specs and it looks like your notebook barely meets the system requirements to install Windows XP, which means it’s going to run slow and sluggish and you won’t be able to install or run very much else on it. I’m including links to your system specs and the requirements of Windows XP.

I have included a link to the support / download area in case you don’t have the utilities.
