I have a sony vaio laptop too, and occasionally I will get this same problem. I always get the WIFI working again, sometimes it just takes forever. Before you follow the long list of instructions below, make sure that you have your wireless switch turned on. On my vaio it is located on the front of the laptop near the audio port, there should be a green light coming from it, if so then follow theses steps:

First off, you are going to need to be able to connect to the internet so grab an Ethernet cable and plug it into your wireless router. Wait a couple of seconds and then viola! internet! ok now that that is done you are going to want to update your driver for your wireless card do that by going here http://esupport.sony.com/ and typing in your model number (located either at the bottom of your laptop screen bezel on the right hand corner, or on the bottom of your laptop). Go to the drivers page and then download the newest one. Install that then restart the computer. That should fix it, if not go into the device manager, uninstall the driver completely and then re-install it. Sometimes my vaio gets to be so stubborn that even after all of those steps it still won't connect so what I do then is plug in a wireless NIC card in the PCMIA slot and connect that way, restart the computer again and then I am good to go. Word of advice, don't turn off your wireless router while your vaio is connected to the internet or you may have to do the above steps again :P Good Luck!

Maybe if your laptop has built in wireless, then try getting a LAN usb adapter.

Is the laptop using a CABLE to connect to the router (linksys box) ? or Wireless.

if a network cable, START MENU, control panel, network connections
RIGHT click the CABLED connection showing limited or no connectivity
Select PROPERTES
scroll down the box to the TCP/IP entry
hightlight it,m select properties, and make sure "obtain IP address automatically" is ticked. Limited or No usually indicates a physical connection exists but not a valid connection in "data"

If wireless, check same for the WIRELESS card
