Comments on: what do you think about the sony vaio laptop?

I was looking to buy a laptop computer desk for the refurbished laptop computer in my office but I'm noticing that I can get significantly lower prices online instead of driving down to my local Office Depot, in many cases 50%-70% cheaper. The only bad thing is that I have to wait a few days to get it delivered.

As a repair tech and gear person, I’d pass on the Vaio. Sony is a quality maker and remarketer of electronic gear, but the cheap build of the Vaio line is really not something to invest in. Put it this way, for 2/3 the cost you can get a machine that is maybe 50-80% faster, nicer and more "weatherproof" and rugged/durable. That means if it is ONLY going to sit on your desk, then fine- if you like the LOOKS of it.

Otherwise look at Acer or Asus or, yeah, Dell. HP also makes some good machines. But hands down I have to again, recommend something like the inspiron 1420/1520 or 1720 (screen size & keyboard being really the only noticeable difference). Even such a consumer Dell is far superior in build than the Sony’s- I’ve taken a lot of both apart and I’d get a Dell or HP or even Toshiba over the Sony -the Sony is just sub-par, least most of their models….

So it depends which model and what your budget and needs are. I’ve got about 8 working laptops and 12 servers/desktops for work now. Most of our laptops are Dell- and HP.

I think most of them are overpriced for what you are getting but they are nice laptops.

With Sony you generally pay for Style and the brand recognition. Yes I agree they are over priced but they are Sexy and I’ve had great experiences with their support department as well as with Dell support, so if you could find a comparable Dell i would say get it. If the VAIO style an proprietary sony software that is on the system is important to you get it. I really don’t think you can lose if you get what you really want.

I got a sony, and it’s a good notebook. I do get alot of attention at the coffee shop with it. I get more looks with my asus eee 9" though.
